Three dead, six injured in Meru-Nairobi highway accident

Three people died on the spot while six others sustained injuries Tuesday evening after the matatu they were traveling in collided head on with a bus at Kiaragana area, along the Meru-Nairobi highway, Embu county.

The dead included two men and a woman who were traveling towards Meru aboard a matatu belonging to Mekina Sacco when the accident occurred.

Embu East police boss Peter Muchemi said the matatu was overtaking on a blind corner downhill when it rammed a bus belonging to Kensilver company which was heading towards Nairobi.

He said that upon collision, the matatu driver lost control of the vehicle which rolled several times before landing in a ditch.

INJURED PASSENGERS

The injured passengers were admitted to various hospitals in Embu county.

Mr Muchemi said the matatu, registration number KCK 381B was speeding while overtaking at the sharp bend, oblivious of the incoming bus, registration number KAX 036R.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and were towed to Runyenjes Police Station.

Mr Muchemi said residents who rushed to the scene had a difficult time trying to rescue the victims who were trapped in the mangled wreckage of the matatu.

He cautioned drivers against overtaking along sharp bends in order to avoid such accidents.
