Things fall apart as Kenya adds 123 more coronavirus cases

Kenya has registered its first triple digits of 123 new cases of coronavirus, the highest single-day cases raising the country’s total number to 1,471.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the government analysed 3,077 samples which is also the largest number of tests that have been done so far.

FATALITIES

Of the new cases, Nairobi recorded 85, Mombasa, 24 and Kiambu four with the youngest case reported being of a one-year-old baby.

“The cases are now spread in 35 hospitals in the country,” said Kagwe.

Mathare recorded the highest number in Nairobi with 33 residents testing positive while Kibra had 14, Embakasi West 12, and Embakasi central four.

In Mombasa, Mvita and Changamwe still have the highest Covid-19 cases with nine and four respectively reported in the last 24 hours.

At the same time, three more people have died of Covid-19, raising the number to 55. All those who succumbed had pre-existing conditions; two had diabetes and one had hypertension.

PUBLIC APPEAL

While praising Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho, the CS said Mombasa County Government is committed to containing the situation.

“Credit goes to Governor Joho. Preparedness, capacity depends on the county. County governments should show aggression in managing the situation,” he said.

Kagwe said he will continue making public appeals as the government was not overwhelmed, urging them to protect themselves by following the government’s directives.

“Kenyans have come of age, they have seen what has happened. We need honesty and if you are told to quarantine then quarantine and those unable to pay bills at quarantine facilities will be allowed to go home,” he added.

He further said that the disease is now within our communities, saying that the increased number of cases is because of community contacts and the number is high in areas where public transport is highly used.

“Let us volunteer to go for the ongoing tests in our estates. Knowing your status is important to protect you and others around you,” he said.
