There was panic when a bomb was found under a car parked near Kamindi Supermarket in Kiambu Town on Sunday.

Worshippers at the nearby Furaha Worship Centre moved out of the main church over fear of an attack.

Head of the church Bishop Peter Gachara told journalists he suspected the worshippers were being targeted because the church has a large following.

A newspaper vendor, Mr Longiuchu Tabioku, noticed the bomb near the right rear wheel of a Toyota Platz.

“I had crossed the road to sell a newspaper to a female worshipper, who had just arrived. I noticed an object underneath the car,” Mr Tabioku said.

At first, he said he thought the owner, who lives in a nearby apartment, had placed the object to prevent the car from reversing.

“Since the object was too small, I asked my customer about it but she had no idea and we called another person who told us he suspected it was a bomb,” said the vendor.

TERRORIST ATTACK

He said, in panic, a hotel owner went to report at Kiambu Police Station. The incident caused tension in the as residents feared a possible terrorist attack.

Police boss Stephen Ngetich arrived at the scene in less than 10 minutes. Officers said the improvised bomb was later detonated by ballistic experts from the Criminal Investigations Department headquarters in Nairobi.

Mr Ngetich said investigations have started. He, however, did not say what damage the bomb would have caused if it had exploded.

Elsewhere in Embu, police are investigating the source of 420 bullets that were found on Saturday abandoned in a matatu for three days.

Runyenjes Administration Police boss Charles Machinji said they received a call from a Neno Sacco employee, saying he had found bullets in a cooking fat container in a bag.

The matatu had travelled from Nairobi to Runyenjes.

Mr Machinji said the workers became suspicious because the package was heavier than the normal ones of a similar size.

He said the owner of the parcel remains a mystery. The police boss said investigations have been launched.
