Teacher who shielded non-Muslims during Mandera attack dies
A teacher who shielded non-Muslims during an ambush by Islamist gunmen on a bus travelling from Nairobi to Mandera has died and will be buried Tuesday.
Mr Salah Sabdow Farah died Monday morning at the Kenyatta National Hospital.
He was admitted to the hospital on December 22, 2015, according to his elder brother Rasheed Farah.
Mr Farah was the deputy head teacher of Mandera Township Primary School. He was airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment following the attack.
During the incident, the Islamist militants reportedly separated passengers according to their religions.
Muslims who were among the 62 passengers shouted at the terrorists, saying non-locals should be left alone, forcing the militants to panic and flee.
“We will take the body to South C in Nairobi for prayers, and burial will be at the Lang’ata Cemetery today,” said Rasheed on Monday.
Mr Farah sustained injuries in his arm and hip bone, where a bullet was lodged but would be later removed through surgery.
He died from the injury on his hip.
“Nurses say he had renal bleeding,” said a cousin.
