Taskforce formed to probe why Ndakaini dam is not full, Nairobians not impressed

The Ministry of Water and Sanitation has formed a taskforce to look into the management of Ndakaini Water Dam.

Water Principal Secretary Joseph Irungu said that the taskforce will have two months to file a report of its findings.

“This taskforce will start its work immediately and Mr Samuel Alima will head it. I expect them to have their report ready within two months, ” said Mr Irungu while on a tour of the dam in Gatanga Constituency, Muranga County.

SABOTAGE

Ndakaini Dam, the main water reservoir for Nairobi County supplying 84 percent of water to city residents, has been beleaguered with claims of sabotage in its operations.

Questions have lingered on why it remains half empty despite the ongoing heavy rains.

The taskforce has membership from different stakeholders including Athi Water Services, Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company, Water Resources Authority, Kenya Meteorological Department, Nairobi County, Muranga County and counts commissioners.

Nairobi Water Company boss Nahashon Muguna said water levels at the dam had risen to 48.5 per cent, translating to 33.5 million cubic meters of water.

On social media, Nairobians dismissed the formation of the task force as a waste of public resources.

Here is what some residents  of the taskforce.

@pmcaxton commented, “This is just another avenue for cronies to pocket taxpayers’ money. Nothing to probe here.”

@pkamaukinyenje questioned, “Why do you need 60 day to probe ndakaini water mystery? Ask “wanjiku “in the morning and evening you have answers and second day you write your report.”

@KiziriiW wrote, “Right on time to coincide with the end of the long rains. Smh.”

@stoneadano added, “60 days to write a report on water level in the dam…this is what is ailing Kenya, avenues to always loot public coffers. At most u need a week to access the area and write the damn report! BTW its just clear its the work of saboteurs in it.”

@jomusasa tweeted, “Another task force?? God help us.”

@LukeWainaina wondered, “So what is the expected outcome of the probe? We are honestly a country with loads of problems!”

@_noble_man wrote, “These task forces are the most useless ‘things’. They are only there to give people good salaries and the story ends there.”
