Police from Pangani police station were on Saturday forced to use teargas to disperse a crowd at the scene of an explosion that ripped apart a matatu in Pangani.

First at the scene were rescuers from St John’s Ambulance who rushed the injured to Guru Nanak Hospital.

Ms Florence Ngina, a volunteer first aider with St John’s, said she heard a huge explosion from her kiosk where she sells vegetables.

“I rushed to the scene where we retrieved the injured and rushed them to the hospital,” she said.

Guru Nanak Hospital matron Ms Surinder Bamri said the facility received 25 patients injured in the afternoon blast.

“Two bodies were brought in while another person died while undergoing resuscitation,” she said.

She added that most of the patients who were rushed to the hospital had lost consciousness while others had life-threatening injuries.

According to passengers who were inside the ill-fated vehicle, they heard a huge explosion from behind before people started scampering for their lives.

Ms Lucy Kaari, who escaped with minor injuries, said she was seated behind the driver when the explosion occurred.

“The next thing I heard was cries of people shouting for help. The conductor was lying on me, bleeding profusely. We were then rescued and brought here,” she said while receiving treatment at Guru Nanak.

Nairobi Senator Mike Mbuvi, who was the first leader to arrive at the scene, condemned the attack and urged the government to investigate and bring the perpetrators to book.
