State takes over Lucy Kibaki funeral arrangements

The government has taken over funeral arrangements for former First Lady Lucy Kibaki as Nyeri leaders united in mourning.

Former President Mwai Kibaki’s spokesman Ngari Gituku said the family would issue a statement after consultations with the government.

“The State is coordinating key aspects of the event and more details will be released once family members are back from London,” Dr Gituku said.

The death has united leaders who rarely see eye to eye. They include Governor Nderitu Gachagua and former Mathira MP Ephraim Maina.

Both said the former First Lady was a true daughter of the county.

“She will be remembered for her development record, passion, inspiration and mentorship to the youth,” Mr Gachagua said.

Mr Maina said Mrs Kibaki was a towering beacon of hope to Nyeri.

“She showed us that family comes first,” he said.

Mukurwe-ini MP Kabando wa Kabando said the former First Lady helped to lobby for a Sh800 million water project.

Mr Gichuli Mugambi, who was supported by the Kibaki family for the Othaya parliamentary seat in 2013, said she was also involved in youth and women projects in the constituency.

In Laikipia, Mr Kibaki’s nephew Ndiritu Mureithi said Mama Lucy was a unifying factor.
