State declares Uhuru’s swearing-in a public holiday

The government has declared Tuesday, November 28 a holiday for the swearing-in of president-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto.

The two will be sworn-in for their second term in office.

Acting Interior Secretary Fred Matiang’i has published a special gazette notice declaring Tuesday a holiday.

This is in line with Section 12 of the Assumption of the Office of President Act which outlines how the swearing in of a president-elect should be conducted.

“By the powers conferred by section 12 (2) of the Assumption of the Office of the President Act, 2012, the Assumption of the Office of the President Committee notifies the public that the swearing-in ceremony of the President-Elect shall take place on Tuesday, the 28th November, 2017, at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani in Nairobi City County, from 10 o’clock in the forenoon.

“It is notified for the general information of the public that, in accordance with the provisions of section 12 (3) of the Assumption of the Office of the President Act, 2012, Tuesday, the 28th November, 2017, shall be a public holiday,” the gazette notice said.

The Assumption of the Office of President Committee is headed by head of public service Joseph Kinyua.

Security has also been beefed up at Kasarani stadium with the rehearsals expected to continue on Thursday.
