Sonko’s endorsement of Peter Kenneth returns to haunt him – AUDIO
The internet never forgets. An undated audio has surfaced online of Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko endorsing former presidential candidate Peter Kenneth for Nairobi gubernatorial seat.
Despite the current animosity between the two, Mr Sonko once praised the former Gatanga MP during an interview with a local radio station.
In the interview, he described Mr Kenneth as a man who loves development and his use of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) the best in the country.
The interview on Radio Maisha had focused on the pressure from Jubilee Party honchos to have Senator Sonko opt out of the Nairobi’s governor race.
Senator Sonko responded that he can only step down for Kenneth if President Kenyatta himself tells him to.
STEP DOWN
“It is only the president who can tell me to step down and I do. We will look for people who ran for presidency in the last general elections like Peter Kenneth to come and run in Nairobi,” Mr Sonko said in the interview.
The two have now turned into arch-rivals for the Jubilee Party.
The fallout has lately degenerated into insults, with Senator Sonko making disparaging remarks on live television towards Mr Kenneth last Sunday.
In an interview on Citizen TV, Sonko ruled out any possibility of stepping down or working with Mr Kenneth.
He used unbecoming language to describe the former presidential aspirant, even as the show’s host Hussein Mohammed tried on several occasions to call for decorum.
On Monday, however, he ate humble pie and apologised to Nairobians over the unsavoury remarks.
Senator Sonko, however, made no apology to his rival Peter Kenneth, who was the subject of the remarks.
