Sonko to take 300 boda boda riders, traders, matatu operators on benchmarking trip to Kigali
Nairobi City County Inspectorate Department, Operations Department Director Peter Mbaya has announced that the county government will take nearly 300 boda boda riders, small scale traders and matatu operators to Rwanda for a benchmarking trip.
The trip, he said, will prepare the groups to be able to self-regulate before the planned Nairobi regeneration programme is implemented.
Mbaya also said the ongoing decongestion that has seen kiosks demolished will continue in line with the regeneration programme that is currently being deliberated by a joint team drawn from national and county government answering directly to the President’s office.
Mbaya has however distanced the county government from what he termed as an illegal demolition exercise that took place in Roysambu on Tuesday night.
“The Roysambu demolition exercise was done by suspected goons who have an ulterior motive. Demolition of illegal structures by the City Hall Inspectorate department is usually done after a prior notice of vacation is issued to those affected,” he said.
Mbaya appealed to the Provincial Administration to support the regeneration of Nairobi exercise citing an incident where an Assistant Chief was arrested while inciting members of the public to stop demolition of illegal structures at Muthurwa area.
On Wednesday Mbaya said the chief had been arrested while trying to stop the demolition exercise and was being held at Central Police Station as he awaited being arraigned in court on Thursday.
The team leading the regeneration of Nairobi has committed to ambitious timelines for the delivery of key services, ranging from garbage collection to launching of a mortgage refinance company.
The team comprising of national and county leaders and co-chaired by governor Mike Sonko and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala last week met with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House and agreed that garbage would be cleared from all the 85 electoral wards in Nairobi within 30 days and a clean-up of Nairobi river would also be initiated.
