Sonko: Beware! Tender-peddlers on the loose
Nairobi governor-elect Mike Sonko has warned Nairobians not to fall prey to some people who are soliciting for bribes to supposedly speed up contract payment and influence the awarding of fresh tenders.
In a statement, Sonko said he had not mandated any individual to follow up City Hall payments.
“It has come to my attention that some individuals purporting to be my staff are soliciting bribes from contractors and suppliers to influence speedy processing of their pending payments. I wish to categorically state here that I have not mandated anyone whatsoever to either solicit or follow up on any pending payments at City Hall,” he wrote.
Sonko assured Nairobians that the issuance of tenders would be done in accordance with the procurement laws.
“However, once sworn in office, I will put in place an elaborate process that will ensure genuine contractors and suppliers with pending payments are taken care of. Under my administration, tenders will be awarded transparently and according to the procurement laws. Any contractor swindled of any money kindly report to me,” he wrote.
The governor-elect also stated that some of the payments that are already being processed include staff salaries.
“All pending payments will be scrutinized by a competent team and payments made including staff salaries which are already being processed and I have already authorized for the disbursement within the next 48 hours,” he stated.
Sonko had after a meeting with the Kenya County Government Workers Union directed that Sh25 million set aside for his inauguration be used to offset one-month arrears owed to the county employees.
