Snake ate 36 million Naira, Nigerian State Official tells auditors

Nigerians on social media went on a craze after reports emerged that a state official had blamed an enigmatic serpent for missing cash amounting to 36 million naira or an equivalent of Sh10 million.

The missing cash belonged to the West African country’s Joints Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), a government agency that registers and admits applicants for various universities in Nigeria.

While responding to audit queries at the JAMB offices in Makurdi, capital of Benue State, an accounts clerk is reported to have claimed her house-help and a work colleague had admitted to using a snake to ‘spiritually’ loot the cash that had been stored in an office vault.

The clerk was responding to queries by auditors from Abuja who were taking account of funds after the registrar struck out the use of scratch cards, which were previously sold to students who sought admission and needed to check their admission status on the JAMB website.

But Nigerians on Twitter could hear none of it and took to the social media platform to rubbish the claims, while some made fun of the bizarre claims by the clerk.
