Six books that every Kenyan child should read

1. Animal Farm – by George Orwell

This book first published in 1945 in England and is an all-time favorite. George Orwell makes it clear that all citizens in a political may appear equal, but there are those that are more equal than others.

2. The River and the Source – by Margaret A Ogolla

Written by the late Margaret A Ogolla, the book revolves around three generations of women from the traditional African setting to the post-colonial era. It traces their perceived roles in society, significance, struggles, joys and tears.

3. Siku Njema – by Ken Walibora

This Swahili fiction by Ken Walibora never runs out of taste. Students should read about the main character Msanifu Kombo who beats all odds to make a future for himself.

This is a story of a young man identified as Idili who wanted to venture into politics with such vigor and high hopes, only to shortly realize how dirty the game was. It would also not hurt to also read Things Fall Apart by same author.

5. Romeo and Juliet – by William Shakespeare

It is acclaimed as the best love story ever told in the form of a play. Romeo and Juliet belongs to a genre of tragic romance that stretch back to antiquity. The story is tragic and enthralling.

6. The Concubine – by Elachi Amadi

Written by Elachi Amadi, the concubine is a thrilling novel to say the least. The story revolves around an extremely beautiful woman who brings suffering and death to all her lovers.
