Shots fired as Kidero, Khalwale supporters clash outside court

Police fired in the air and lobbed teargas canisters as supporters of Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale  clashed outside the Milimani law courts on Friday.

The Nairobi governor has sued Senator Bonny Khalwale for linking him to the collapse of Mumias Sugar Company.

The Kakamega Senator had linked the governor to the Mumias Sugar Company scam during President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to Bungoma County.

The governor claims Dr Khalwale remarks were “slanderous” and is aggrieved that the financial problems that bedevilled the company have been associated with his name.

Supporters of the two politicians took their rivalry to the courtroom where they engaged in a shouting match.

During Friday’s proceedings, Justice Joseph Srgon reinstated an order barring Senator Khalwale from repeating the allegations that Governor Kidero is responsible for the financial problems at the sugar company.
