Security beefed up in Nairobi for UN conference

Security has been heightened within Nairobi’s Central Business District with heavy security personnel deployed on the streets as the capital hosts the 14th United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

Several roads in Nairobi will remain closed for the duration of the week-long conference that began on Sunday at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre.

President Uhuru Kenyatta and United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon presided over the official opening of conference.

Kenya is hosting the event for the second time, with 80 ministers and 4,800 delegates from 194 countries expected to attend.

ROADS CLOSED

The week-long conference will feature ministerial debates, high-level round tables, thematic events, a World Investment Forum and a Civil Society Forum, among other events.

As a result of the closure of major roads within the city’s CBD, heavy traffic is expected all week with motorists and other road users already notified of alternative roads to use.

Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road and City Hall Way will be closed for the entire period of the conference while Standard Street, Mama Ngina Street and Webera Street will be closed on certain days.

Motorists heading to and out of the city centre through Parliament Road, Harambee Avenue, Taifa Road and City Hall Way will be required to use Haile Selassie Avenue, Kenyatta Avenue and University Way.
