Ruto breaks silence on Matiang’i ‘super role’ in cabinet

Deputy President William Ruto has for the first time commented on Presidential Uhuru Kenyatta executive order that placed Interior secretary Fred Matiang’i at the heart of government operations.

Through his Twitter account, Ruto  said all government officials must align their operations with the new order.

He broke his silence on the reorganisation in cabinet a day after meeting with President Uhuru Kenyatta in Mombasa and later being hosted for lunch.

Details of the Wednesday meeting remained top secret with the State House communication team unwilling to lift the lid.

The appointment of Matiang’i as the chairperson of the National Development Implementation and Communication Committee had sent jitters in Ruto’s camp, with some allies publicly expressing displeasure.

The DP has now urged all government officials to adhere to the order.

He tweeted; “GoK officers at all levels should align their operations to the ORDER issued by HE the President setting up committees at county, regional, national (technical)and national (cabinet) for purposes of effective implementation of projects & programmes and efficient communication.”

Matiang’i’s new role will see him report directly to the President.

His committee that is composed of cabinet secretaries, attorney general and head of public service will monitor the implementation of government projects.

The powerful committee’s mandate matches what Ruto had been doing as the President’s principal assistant, touring the country and inspecting government projects in what the President once termed as “kutangatanga.”
