REVEALED: The billions Uhuru, Sonko plan to spend in Nairobi


President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday hosted Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko for a discussion on a multi-billion programme aimed at improving the social and economic sector.

Governor Sonko was accompanied to the meeting at Harambee House by Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe and nominee for County Secretary Peter Kariuki.

It was also attended by Cabinet Secretaries Henry Rotich (Treasury), Mr James Macharia (Transport and Infrastructure), Mr Eugene Wamalwa of Water and Irrigation ministry, Dr Cleopa Mailu (Health) and Prof Jacob Kaimenyi (Lands, Housing and Urban Development).

COST BILLIONS

In a statement, the president said the programme will focus on housing and settlement, infrastructure and transport. It is estimated to cost billions of shillings.

During the meeting, both the national and the county government agreed that all relevant state departments and city county departments will in the next four weeks realign their procurement plans to ensure relevant allocations are available for the implementation of the programme.

It will also see various programmes on energy, water resources, environment and solid waste, youth, women and persons with disability started to improve the livelihood of the city residents.

Deputy Governor Polycarp Igathe and Tourism Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala co-chair the technical committee of the special task force on Nairobi.
