Remembering Saba Saba heroes on the 20th anniversary

The black and white image of the late Martin Shikuku and Siaya Senator James Orengo atop a pick up vehicle heading to Kamukunji for a saba saba rally in early 90s will forever remain etched in the minds of some Kenyans.

But for nearly 20 million others who had not been born then, they can only read in history books and newspapers.

Lives were lost, people were maimed (some to date) and property worth millions of shillings was destroyed as Kenyans fought for multiparty democracy.

Today, Kenya is a multiparty democracy, enshrined in the constitution. We do not need running battles to register a political party or hold a demonstration.

But as we honour the gallant activists who paid the price with their lives many years ago on this day, we show you how the Daily Nation covered the bloody running battles between the political activists and the ruthless police.
