Raila snubs Uhuru’s Madaraka Day invite

Cord leader Raila Odinga snubbed President Uhuru Kenyatta’s invitation to attend the official Madaraka Day celebrations at Afraha Stadium, in Nakuru.

Mr Odinga instead opted to stay in Nairobi for the Opposition’s rally at Uhuru Park.

He did not relay his apologies for not being in Nakuru, where a well labelled front row seat remained vacant throughout the celebrations.

President Kenyatta had invited Mr Odinga to the celebrations during a meeting held at State House on Tuesday. Also present at the meeting were deputy President William Ruto and Senator Moses Wetangula.

Reports indicated that President Uhuru and his deputy had asked Cord leaders to call off the Uhuru Park rally and join them in Nakuru, but Mr Odinga said their arrangements were too advanced for the rally to be canceled.

Cord leaders had told their Jubilee counterparts that the Uhuru Park rally would be peaceful and will only start after the Madaraka Day celebrations in Nakuru.

The annual national celebrations are being held outside Nairobi for the first time.
