Kenyan police holding Museveni’s ‘stolen car’
A car believed to be owned by Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni and was stolen and sneaked into the country is currently being held at the Flying headquarters in Pangani.
Police have said that the car, which currently has a South Sudan registration number SSD598M, was found in Gilgil after its occupants, who were being pursued by the police, abandoned it and fled.
The police believe the vehicle’s original registration number had been changed.
CAR CHASE
A source privy to the matter said that the car, a Toyota Kulger, was first spotted early this week in Murang’a and flying squad officers were then dispatched to the area to recover and impound it.
On Thursday, the car was then spotted leaving Murang’a for Nairobi and officers then trailed it up to Gilgil where the occupants jumped out and fled.
A police statement seen by Nairobi News indicates that the driver of the car defied police orders to stop and a car chase then ensued before he abandoned it near Gilgil weigh-bridge and disappeared into the bush.
Flying squad boss Musa Yego told Nairobi News that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
STOLEN CAR
“For now we cannot speculate much, investigations are still ongoing. Officers are also looking for the occupants of the car who fled after abandoning it,” he said.
This is not the first time a vehicle belonging to an East African head of state has been reported stolen and later found in a neigbouring country.
In 2018, President Uhuru Kenyatta’s car was stolen from State House Nairobi and later found in Tanzania.
The car, a Nissan V8 model, had the registration plate number T954 DEQ which police said were fake. Its original number plate was KCP 184R.
