Preacher who had the world listening during Royal wedding

On Saturday as the world followed the Royal wedding of Prince Harry Duke of Sussex and US actress Meghan Markle – now Duchess of Sussex, one person had everyone’s ears.

American Bishop Michael Bruce Curry delivered a powerful address full of historical references and had churchgoers smiling and others appeared transfixed.

The Chicago-born bishop spoke passionately about the power of love, quoting Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

“There’s power in love, don’t underestimate it,” he said during his wide-ranging speech, a significant break from tradition.

The Most Reverend Michael Curry became the first black presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church – like the Church of England, part of the Anglican Communion – when he was appointed in 2015.

Social media was awash with clips of bemused senior royals including Prince William seemingly trying not to laugh as they listened to the passionate oratory of Curry.

The most shared quote was the one which he said, “two young people fell in love and we all showed up,” which prompted an out bust of laughter.
