Police yet to arrest fugitive Unep employee

Police in Nairobi have denied reports of the arrest and questioning of an employee of the United Nations Environment Programme (Unep) for allegedly battering his Kenyan lover.

National Police Service spokesman George Kinoti on Thursday said detectives who had gone to interview the victim at the hospital were denied access.

“The man has gone into hiding since the incident was reported but we are tracking him down,” Kinoti said.

Diplomatic police are helping police track down Alphonse Kambu, a Papua New Guinea citizen who works at the Unep headquarters in Gigiri.

On Thursday afternoon, Unep sent a press release to media houses saying that Mr Kambu had “voluntarily met with police to help with their investigations.”

Police have however refuted the Unep statement saying by close of business on Thursday and Friday morning, Mr Kambu was still at large.

INVESTIGATIONS

It is alleged that Mr Kambu battered his ex-girlfriend, Ruth Gakii with whom they have a three year old son on Sunday evening.

Ms Gakii told Nairobi News that the two separated in 2012 and the court granted her custody over their son although the father spends time with him during weekends.

She narrated how Mr Kambu brought home their son on Sunday evening from a birthday party and later picked a quarrel with her over food which degenerated into an assault.

Director of Public Prosecutions Keriako Tobiko on Thursday ordered investigations after photographs of Ms Gakii’s  bruised face went viral on social media, following claims that she had been assaulted by her lover.

A letter by assistant Director of Public Prosecutions Jacinta Nyamosi read: “The reports also indicate that the complainant has reported several cases of abuse but no action has been taken so far.”
