Westgate: Postmortem to identify attacker

A team of local and FBI pathologists on Tuesday conducted a postmortem on a body suspected to belong to one of the Al Shabaab militants who attacked the Westgate mall.

The body was retrieved from the rubble of the shopping mall on Saturday.

Two FBI forensic experts, Susan and Peters, joined the team led by Government Pathologist, Johansen Oduor at the City Mortuary.

The exercise took approximately two hours and samples extracted from the body were taken to the Government Chemist for further forensic investigations.

The body, according to witnesses, was terribly burnt.

On Saturday, Dr Oduor  had led another team of forensic experts in conducting postmortems on two other bodies retrieved from the mall’s rubble.

The bodies belonged to males but had extensive burns that made it difficult for the experts to establish their identities.

“We are yet to know the identities of the men because their bodies were burnt and so extracting samples for DNA becomes difficult,” he explained.

Also collected from the rubble were  four AK47 rifles and a rocket propelled grenade, which according to ballistic experts, do not belong to the government.
