A man allegedly hacked his wife to death in a village in Baringo on Thursday following a quarrel over Christmas goodies.

Mr Samson Lebene, from Loropil village, is said to have been infuriated by persistent queries from his wife about what he intended to buy their eight children.

The couple’s daughter, Sylvia Lebene, said the quarrel started on Tuesday night.

“My mother asked father what plans he had for the festivities. A quarrel ensued and we were ordered to go to bed,” she narrated.

On Wednesday morning, Mr Lebene ordered the children to fetch water from Lake Baringo.

“It appeared the issue had been resolved but when we returned, we found a lot of people in our homestead and learned that mother had been hacked to death. Her body lay in a pool of blood and my father had vanished,” said the girl.

Neighbours, who were on Thursday huddled in groups at the homestead, said Mr Lebene kept to himself.

ARRESTED

“In fact no one goes to his house because it is always under lock and key,” said Mr Gideon ole Kipir.

He said in Ilchamus culture, a man who kills a woman is cursed.

“I am lost for words because we have never seen such a thing here,” said a shocked Mr ole Kipir.

Baringo South police chief Otulia Kaunya said the man was arrested on Wednesday evening and was on Thursday charged with murder.

“He was arrested at Loropil in Baringo South,” he said.

“However, the prosecution requested 10 days to complete investigations. The suspect is being held at the Marigat Police Station,” said Mr Kaunya.

Ilchamus Ward Rep Wesley Lekakimon condemned the killing and urged residents to solve problems in an amicable manner.
