Nine gunned down in city crime wave

Nine suspected robbers were shot dead in three separate incidents in Nairobi in the last two days.

Nairobi county commander Benson Kibue on Wednesday said police recovered toy pistols and knives from the dead.

Some valuables from victims of attacks were also recovered, he added.

Five of the men were gunned down at Summer Pub in Dandora Phase 5, where they were robbing patrons.

Seven young men, armed with toy pistols, had raided the bar. Administration Police officers from the Muoroto patrol base arrived at the scene after the patrons raised the alarm.

The officers shot four of them dead as they tried to flee. The other three dashed back to the bar.

The officers pursued them and gunned down one.

“We recovered cash and other valuables from the suspects. We suspect the valuables were stolen from the patrons,” he said.

Two other suspects were shot dead in Glucola slums, Ruaraka, around 6pm on Tuesday.

Officers from Ruaraka Police Station rushed to the scene after residents reported that a gang of five robbers had stormed the area.

“We recovered a home-made pistol that is capable of firing and two swords, as well as mobile phones,” an investigating officer said.

Mr Kibue further said two other suspected criminals were gunned down at the notorious Makaburini area on Wednesday morning.

The men, who were armed with knives, had attacked a pedestrian.

The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) chairman, Mr Macharia Njeru, on Wednesday urged the police to report to them all shootings by officers that result in deaths or serious injuries so that they can be independently investigated.

The Ipoa Act requires the police to report all such cases. Ipoa now has 21 investigators, 11 complaints management officers, five legal officers and several monitoring officers.
