Neighbours who feed Nairobi


Several counties have found an economic lifeline with Nairobi’s 3.3 million Nairobi residents providing a constant market for food all year round.

With almost all Nairobians dependent on markets for their daily supplies, several specific regions are providing the county daily with tonnes of assorted food commodities.

Toi and Gikomba markets, popular with food commodities, clearly give some of the indicators of how big a market Nairobi is for several agricultural counties.

According to Ezekiel Rema the chairman Toi Market, at least lorries arrive at the market laden with food produce some from as far as Kisii and Garissa.

The same is replicated at the Wakulima Market where traders queue for the foods.

Meat:

Meat mainly comes from Kajiado and Garissa.

Fish:

Fish comes from mainly  Lake Victoria.

Sugarcane:

Kisii region also provides most of the sugarcane sold both in Toi market and Eastlands.

Bananas:

Green bananas are sourced from Meru.

Maize:

Maize grains come from Eldoret and Kitale

Vegetables:

Vegetables come mainly from Limuru and central Kenya.

Fruits:

Fruits are sourced from Ukambani and Coastal regions.
