Top Nakumatt manager to take mental test in charge of killing colleague

A senior manager at Nakumatt Supermarket who is alleged to have shot a colleague dead at the supermarket’s headquarters, along Mombasa Road, has been taken for a mental examination before he answers to a murder charge.

Transport manager Abdul Kairo is reported to have fatally shot Stephen Wafula Musumbi, 23,  twice on the chest on November 10, 2015 under unclear circumstances.

Prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki applied to have the suspect be detained for two weeks for the preliminary procedure.

Mr Kairo will return to court on July 18, 2017 to answer to the capital charge.

Investigators believe Mr Kairo used unnecessary force, considering that he aimed at the deceased chest and fired two shots.

MENTAL ASSESSMENT

When the suspect was arraigned before Lady Justice Jessie Lessit on Monday, she directed that the suspect be taken for a mental assessment at the Mathare Hospital then be detained at the Industrial Area police station.

Nakumatt head of security Michael Ndung’u was quoted in a section of the media alleging the deceased, who appeared to be mentally disturbed, was chasing his colleagues while armed with a panga and a spade.

One of the workers sustained a panga cut while the rest fled to safety.

The deceased is said to have attacked Kairo who shot him at point blank range.
