Saturday is the deadliest day to drive in Nairobi – NTSA

Fatalities resulting from road accidents in Nairobi have reduced this year, according to a research by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

The research however showed that Nairobi was still leading in the number of road fatalities nationally at 16 per cent.

This was an improvement from the 23 per cent recorded in last year’s half year report by the authority.

The research found that most accidents in the city occur on weekends with Saturday being the high-risk day. Weekends and evenings are the peak periods with Saturday and 8 o’clock when most accidents occur.

Sunday had 267 fatalities and Friday 253, representing 17 and 16 per cent, respectively, while February had the highest fatalities at 301 cases.

Thika Superhighway leads with the highest number of accidents with 30 fatalities, making it the most dangerous road in the city. It is followed by Mombasa Road, Waiyaki Way, Eastern By-pass and Kangundo and Jogoo roads.

Nairobi was followed by Nakuru, Kiambu and Makueni while Wajir was the safest road usage county with no fatal accident.

NTSA Director-General Francis Meja said they were currently working on key areas of improvement we are that include road safety interventions, drunk driving, use of speed guns and cameras along with education.
