Crime ring involved in Nairobi drug racket busted

Nairobi County government has broken a suspected city crime ring that is involved in peddling of contraband alcohol and drugs.

This comes after Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing board on Friday nabbed a group of people living with disability with hundreds of sachets of contraband alcoholic drinks.

The seized contraband are believed to be from a neighbouring country judging from their branding.

The discovery followed a tip off that unearthed alcohol concealed as candy and sweets.

The officers acting on the tip off managed to confiscate the contraband but let free the disabled individuals for fear of public criticism.

Nairobi City county Alcoholic Drinks Control and Licensing Board chair Kennedy Odhiambo said that it is suspected that a number of people living with disability in Nairobi purporting to be selling sweets and other confectioneries in different streets of the capital city are being used to peddle contraband alcohol and drugs.

PUBLIC BACKLASH

He said the suspects are used by people who take advantage of their different challenges to use them in the full knowledge that the authorities will be reluctant to arrest them for fear of backlash from members of the public.

Mr Odhiambo has, however, warned the perpetrators that he will implement the mandate of the board to the letter to ensure that Nairobi is free from alcoholic drinks and drugs leave alone contraband.

“My board is disturbed by these findings where disabled people are used to distribute alcohol and drugs concealed as sweets to their clients.

“We are following useful leads and the perpetrators must be warned that their days of harming residents of this city especially the youth are over. Surveillance to root out the vice has been intensified,” added Mr Odhiambo.
