Nairobi cop fined Sh700k for collecting bribes from matatu operators

A Nairobi-based traffic police officer was on Thursday fined Sh700,000 with an option of two years imprisonment for collecting bribes from matatu operators.

Constable Charles Mbiti was found guilty by the anti-corruption court of collecting bribes at the Railways bus terminus.

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission investigated him after members of the pubic reported him and later charged him.

The commission tweeted, “Milimani Anti-Corruption Court fines police constable Charles Mbiti KES 700,000 or 2 years imprisonment in default, for collecting bribes at Nairobi railways bus terminus. @EACCKenya successfully investigated this case following numerous reports made by the public.”
Kenyans lauded the commission and urged that it nails down powerful individuals charged with corruption as well.
