Mutahi Ngunyi denies hate speech charges over Twitter posts

By PAUL OGEMBA October 12th, 2015 1 min read

Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi was on Monday charged with four counts of ethnic contempt and hate speech.

Mr Ngunyi denied the charges and was released on a cash bail of Sh200,000.

He took the plea after Justice Joseph Onguto dismissed his bid to stop the Director of Public Prosecution from charging him.

The DPP said there is evidence to charge Mr Ngunyi with ethnic contempt contrary to the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) Act.

Mr Ngunyi is being charged in relation to messages he allegedly posted on his Twitter account disparaging Cord leader Raila Odinga and the Luo community.

The case against Mr Ngunyi follows a complaint by Mr Apollo Mboya who represents the Law Society of Kenya at the NCIC.
