Museveni’s government moves to shut down all porn websites in Uganda

The Ugandan government, through its communication regulator, has given all internet service providers (ISPs) in the country an ultimatum of up to September 2018 to stop streaming pornography.

According to multiple agencies, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has directed all the internet providers to ensure they block 27 websites both local and international that stream pornographic content by next month.

Godfrey Mutabazi, UCC Executive Director revealed that the regulatory body had blacklisted 10 international pornography websites as well 17 local ones that are very popular with Ugandans.

“The commission is in receipt of a list of Internet sites with pornographic content from the Pornography Control Committee. The Committee has established that the list of the websites attached hereto is currently streaming pornography to Uganda in breach of Section 13 of the Anti-Pornography Act, 2014,” Mutambazi has been quoted the Ugandan media.

Despite the directive, it has been reported that only a few internet providers have complied. UCC has now threatened to take stun action to those ISPs which will not have complied by next month.

In 2016 President Yoweri Museveni and his Minister for Ethics, Simon Lokodo, stole the headlines with news that the government had bought a machine estimated to have cost $88,000 (Sh9 million) which would detect, control and scrutinize porn on mobile handsets and other electronic devices.
