We are not moving out of market, Githurai traders vow

Traders in Githurai market have strongly opposed plans by the county government to move them from their present location where they’ve been operating for almost a decade now.

The traders say that it is not clear whether they will all occupy a section in town where they are scheduled to be moved to.

Speaking to Nairobi News on Tuesday, the traders said it would be better off if they are allowed to remain in their current work stations.

DEMOLISHED

“We are really disturbed because the place they want to move us to will cannot accommodate all of us, ” said Mary Kimani a trader.

Her sentiments were echoed by Jared Onsase who said that most traders are worried that they will lack a place to do business.

“Already people have booked places in the new market without our consent. That is one thing we shall not allow,” he said.

Two months the Kenya National Highway Authority (KENHA) demolished stalls that were erected on road reserves in Githurai, only for the traders to return soon thereafter.
