Moi University to open campus in Gatundu
Moi University will open a campus in Gatundu South in two months time, increasing the number of its constituent colleges to ten.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Richard Mibei said the new campus, known as Mama Ngina University College, will be situated at Ruburi Secondary School grounds and is set to open in September.
The college which is expected to initially admit 300 students will also absorb some of the students of Garissa University College that was closed following a terror attack by suspected Al Shabaab militants in April, he said.
It will also have centers at Kiganjo Polytechnic and Mutomo Primary School where similar facilities have been identified.
Prof Mibei was speaking during an inspection tour of the facility by officials of the Commission for University Education, accompanied by members of the university council and area MP Moses Kuria.
“We are ready and all set to start soon as soon as we get the gazettement which we hope will be done by July. We should be able to bring in students by September this year,” Prof Mibei said.
DEGREE COURSES
The VC said the university college will initially offer diploma courses in business, education, computer studies, IT and arts before eventually venturing into degree courses in law, engineering and sciences, among others.
He said the college will occupy some of the classes in the day secondary school and later embark on construction of hostels.
“There are many secondary and primary schools around here and there is high demand for higher education,” he added.
Mr. Kuria said the local community has embraced the new development which will open up investment opportunities in the area and boost the local economy.
“We are excited because this will open huge investment opportunities here especially in the areas of housing and marketing of farm produce,” Mr. Kuria said and appealed to locals to invest in construction of hostels.
The MP said his office has teamed up with the Kiambu county government to provide the necessary infrastructure, including grading and murraming of roads for ease of transport.
