Retired president Moi, Nasa leaders join Kenyans in mourning Nkaissery


Retired President Daniel arap Moi and opposition leader Raila Odinga are among prominent Kenyans leaders who have mourned Internal Security Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery.

In a message delivered through his office, former President Moi has sent his message of condolence to President Uhuru Kenyatta, his family, people of Kenya and Maasai community following Nkaissery’s untimely death.

The former president said he learnt of the death of Nkaissery with shock and disbelief. He described Nkaissery as a man who served this country with exceptional energy and dedication.

Opposition outfit Nasa, led by presidential candidate Mr Odinga, who is due to attend a campaign rally in Kwale County later on Saturday, has also conveyed messages of condolescenes to the family and friend of Nkaissery.

Speaking in Mombasa, Mr Odinga said his differences with Nkaissery were “political, not personal”.

He called for speedy investigations into the cause of the minister’s death.

RESPECTED LEADER

Nasa co-principal Moses Wetang’ula described Nkaissery as “a statesman, a patriot, a respected leader, a neighbour and my good personal friend.”

Early on Saturday morning, several Cabinet Secretaries and other top government officials trooped to the Lee Funeral Home where Nkaissery’s body is laying.

Other prominent personalities who have condoled with Nkaissery’s family include State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and DCI boss Ndegwa Muhoro.

“It is unfortunate that we have lost the CS, our prayers are with his family,” Muhoro said.

There was also numerous messages of goodwill from several leaders via social media.

 Nkaissery’s death, comes exactly a month to the General Election set for August 8, and is a big blow to the nation due to the critical role he was playing in strategizing with top security chiefs to ensure a peaceful election.

Nkaissery has been instrumental in the upcoming IAAF World under 18 championships, which are set to be held in Kenya for the first time.
