‘Crocodile’ Emmerson Mnagangwa declared Zimbabwe president

Incumbent Emmerson Mnagangwa was on Friday declared Zimbabwe President.

The southern Africa country is nervy moments after Mnagangwa’s closest challenger, Nelson Chamisa, rejected the results as “fake”.

Results by the electoral commission from all the 10 provinces indicate Mnangagwa won 50.8 percent of votes with Chamisa garnering 44.3 per cent.

And in an incident that mirrors the contested results of the 2007 Kenyan elections, police removed opposition officials from the electoral commission stage when they rejected the results.

Chamisa who heads the opposition’s MDC Alliance party told the BBC the electoral count could not be verified.

“I am humbled to be elected President of the Second Republic of Zimbabwe,” Mnangangwa declared on his official social media pages.

The Head of State, who replaced veteran leader Robert Mugabe in a bloodless coup, also reached out to his rivals and promised to build a ‘new’ Zimbabwe stating; “Though we may have been divided at the polls, we are united in our dreams. This is a new beginning. Let us join hands, in peace, unity and love, and together build a new Zimbabwe for all.”

Chamisa had through the electoral process insisted he is the winner of the presidential poll, telling reports on Thursday that the ruling Zanu-PF party was ‘trying hard to bastardize the result’ something ‘we will not allow’.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission denied this claims.

Six people died after opposition protests in Harare on Wednesday over alleged vote rigging were met by heavy response from the Police and military.
