Migori leaders condemn the murder of Sharon Otieno

Leaders in Migori County have condemned the murder of Sharon Otieno, the Rongo University student who was found dead and her body dumped in a forest in Oyugis, in Homa Bay county.

Ms Otieno was kidnapped alongside ‘Nation’ journalist Barack Oduor, who jumped from the vehicle they had been abducted in and sustained serious injuries.

Migori leaders have come out and called for speedy investigation into the incident.

Migori County Woman Representative Ms Pamela Odhiambo said: “As a woman leader of Migori County I condemn this brutal act in the strongest terms possible. As a mother, I know how unbearable the pain is. Losing a second year student from such a humble background is extinguishing the hope of an entire family.”

She added: “On behalf of Sharon’s family, all women and girls in Migori, we demand for justice for Sharon. Those found culpable should face the law.”

The same sentiments were echoed by Uriri MP Mark Nyamita.

“It is unfortunate for someone to end the life of an innocent lady. It is even very unfortunate that the lady was pregnant. We are calling for speedy investigation into this serious matter. Let no stone be left unturned. Let however is behind it be brought to book regardless of their positions or status,” said Mr Nyamita.

HEINOUS CRIME

“As I join the rest in mourning Sharon Otieno, I’m calling on my county mates to remain calm as investigating arms of government expedite investigations in the matter. Perpetrators of the act must be brought to book,” said Mr Kennedy Makasembo, a trade unionist.

Government spokesperson Eric Kiraithe has meanwhile gave an assurance that the incident will be investigated expeditiously.

“I take this opportunity to assure the public and media fraternity in particular that this matter will be expeditiously investigated and perpetrators of this heinous crime will be made to face the full force of the law,” Mr Kiraithe said in a statement.

At the same time, the office of Migori County Governor Okoth Obado has rubbished claims linking the governor to the abduction of Nation journalist Barack Oduor and the late Sharon Otieno.

According to Migori County communications boss Nicholas Anyuor, the allegations are meant to damage the Governor’s reputation.

Mr Anyuor asked the media refrains from associating Obado with unsubstantiated claims that he allegedly impregnated and abandoned the university student.

“The reports linking the governor to the late Sharon to governor Obado are malicious and unsubstantiated. The media should stop using the name of the governor in the reporting on the incident,” said Mr Anyuor.
