Matiang’i: New Moi University VC is here to stay
Education Secretary Fred Matiang’i has defended the appointment of Prof Laban Ayiro as acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University.
Dr Matiangi on Wednesday said he had followed the law and the appointment will not be revoked.
This was in response to Tuesday’s protest by politicians who claimed that Prof Ayiro is an ‘outsider’ and wanted him replaced with Prof Isaac Kosgey.
The protest was led by two governors, Uasin Gishu’s Jackson Mandago and his Elgeyo Marakwet counterpart Alex Tolgos.
MPs Oscar Sudi (Kapseret), Sila Tiren (Moiben), James Bett (Kesses) and Uasin Gishu county assembly speaker Isaac Terer also took part in the protest.
Dr Matiangi, on his part, said he will not respond to politicians because he is not one.
“I am a public servant and will not engage in politics. We have many politicians whom they can engage,” said Dr Matiangi during the Innovation Africa 2016 conference.
HANDING OVER
At the same time, Prof Richard Mibey has handed over to Prof Ayiro as the acting Vice Chancellor of Moi University despite protests by North Rift leaders over the appointment by Dr Matiang’i.
Prof Mibey handed over officially to Prof Anyiro after holding a meeting with the University Senate before presiding over rehearsal for the 32dn graduation ceremony to be held Thursday and Friday.
He confirmed that the graduation would go on despite protests by the local leaders to disrupt it demanding appointment of Prof Isaac Kosgey who topped during the recruitment interviews.
A Section of local leaders led by Governors, MPs and MCAs from the region are holding parallel meetings in Eldoret town over the appointment of Prof Ayiro which they have termed political. They want the graduation ceremony postponed to resolve the matter.
