Man and woman in court for spiking revelers’ drinks with ‘mchele’

A Nyeri court has allowed the police to detain two suspected members of a criminal group that has reportedly been drugging and robbing club-goers in the region.

Senior Resident Magistrate Ruth Kefa allowed officers from Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to detain Anthony Mathenge and Jane Wanjiru Ndung’u for 14 days to enable police finalize investigations and make more arrests.

A police detective, Henry Kyalo, told the court the two suspects were arrested on June 29, 2018 after drugging and robbing John Muriithi at Escape Bar in Ruring’u area, in the outskirts of Nyeri town.

EXTORT MONEY

The officer said the suspects also used the victim’s mobile phone to send alarming text messages to his friends and extort money.

“They borrowed a loan from Barclays Bank using a mobile phone application and withdrew the money. Several friends of the complainant responded and sent money using M-Pesa but were suspicious. They reported to police and a search commenced,” said Mr Kyalo.

The court heard that the two suspects went to the club and joined Mr Muriithi who was with friends in a table taking drinks.

Mr Muriithi was left by his friends in the bar in company of the suspects, narrated Mr Kyalo in his miscellaneous application.

The complainant, the court heard, was drugged using an unknown substance and was abandoned in the hotel’s room on June 30, 2018 while unconscious and without memory of where he was.

“Due to the nature of the case, I want time to make more arrests. It is a case of stupefying with intent to commit a felony. The latest victim Mr Macharia was robbed of his mobile phone, money, national Identity card and ATM cards by the suspects,” said Mr Kyalo.

He further told the court that the suspects were arrested in Karatina town driving a personal motor vehicle Toyota Caldina black in colour, which was also seized by the police.

TRACKER

The two were tracked using the Police Mobile Communicator Tracker. At first, the tracker indicated the suspects were at Skuta Estate, later at Wambugu Farm area and were finally located in Karatina.

“Some of the documents belonging to the complainant were recovered inside the car. They were arrested and positively identified by the complainant at Nyeri Central Police station,” said Mr Kyalo.

The suspects did not oppose the police application to detain them.

Mr Kyalo told the court he will conduct identification parades of the two suspects as he is expecting more complaints on drugging vice in Nyeri and will also record additional statements.

The case will be mentioned on July 16, 2018.
