Tragedy hit a family in Gem sub county of Siaya County on Tuesday after a man stabbed to death a widow he had inherited.

In retaliation, members of the public pounced on the inheritor and beat him senseless before he was rescued by the police who later rushed him to Siaya County Referral Hospital in serious condition.

George Ochieng Ohana, 41, is said to have attacked the widow at Ahono village in Malunga West Sub location in North West Gem before fleeing to his home in the neighbouring Alego-Usonga sub county.

According to the North West Gem location chief, Barrack Opondo, the inheritor is said to have differed with the widow, the late Judith Owino, whom he suspected had planned to kick him out of her home.

The chief said that one of the widow’s children had informed him that the suspect had picked a quarrel with their mother earlier on but the family had supper together before the inheritor left for unknown destination at around 9.30pm.

BEATEN SENSELESS

Opondo said that the man returned at around 2.30am in the morning, knocked on the door and summoned the widow outside.

“The widow would later be heard screaming for help and when the children and villagers turned up, she was lying in a pool of blood with the accused nowhere to be seen,” said the administrator.

He said that the villagers immediately mounted a search which extended to the suspect’s home in North Alego where they found him.

They pounced on him and gave him a thorough beating, as they were joined by other people from Alego.

The police, who had been alerted, however, arrived on time and snatched him from the public before rushing him to the hospital.

The body of the mother of four was moved to Yala sub county hospital mortuary for postmortem, as the police launched further investigations.
