Man fined Sh15,000 for selling single sticks of cigarette

A man was on Tuesday fined Sh 15,000 in a Nyeri Court or serve five months in prison for selling cigarettes in single sticks.

Simon Gichuki Maina appeared before resident magistrate Ruth Kefa where he pleaded guilty to selling single sticks of cigarette as opposed to selling in packets as required by the law.

The Court heard that Maina was nabbed by Nyeri police and Nacada officers at Kasuku bar in Nyeri town on February 11.

He however asked the court for leniency citing that he did not know it was a crime.

In the same court, a motorcyclist was released on a Sh50,000 bond or a Sh 30,000 cash bail after he was charged for refusing to test for alcohol, driving carelessly, failing to have insurance and not wearing appropriate cycling gear.

Joseph Kihara was arrested on the Nyeri- karatina road after he rammed his motorcycle into a commuter matatu.

The court heard that Kihara was not wearing a reflector jacket and a helmet as required by law, did not have valid insurance and further refused to blow into the alcoblow to establish if he was drunk.

The accused denied the charges and asked the court for a reasonable bond.

The case will be heard on February 27, 2019.
