Man denies defrauding woman of Sh40 million

A man will pay Sh1 million bail to regain his freedom after he was accused of fraudulently obtaining Sh40.5 million from a woman.

Magistrate Emily Ominde of Makadara court was told that Mr Kelvin Karanja Kamau teamed up with his accomplice Ms Juliet Kagendo Kamwaro pretending to be a businessman who supplied different construction sites with building materials.

State counsel Simon Muriuki said Ms Kamwaro approached Ms Alice Ingaiza Magodo in her office at Kenya Church of Christ in Uhuru estate in January.

Business venture

She told Ms Magodo that she had often seen her on television and that together with her senior partner, Mr Kamau they wanted her to join their business venture.

According to the counsel, Ms Kamwaro told her that they had been contracted by the China Wu Yi company, responsible for some of the biggest building projects in the county including the Thika Superhighway.

“She told her that China Wu Yi was carrying out some construction work at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology and they had secured a lucrative contract,” said Mr Muriuki.

Ms Magodo was required to give some money to the accused who was said be in charge of  purchases while Ms Kamwaro and her would oversee the logistical operations.

When the deal was sealed the complainant started by giving Sh105,000 to Mr Kamau on February 8.

Mr Muriuki said she realised she was being defrauded on March 18.

Mr Kamau denied the charges.

The magistrate declined police’s application to detain Mr Kamau for a week to complete investigations.

The case will be heard on May 19.
