Kidero to be probed on Sh40m used during Obama visit

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero will be among a host of top officials to be held accountable for millions spent during President Barack Obama’s visit.

Auditor-General Edward Ouko has said he will audit all the money spent for the three day visit because the amount involved was “substantial”.

Nairobi County government is said to have spent Sh40 million in beautification of the city ahead of the US President visit.

It is not clear how much the national government spent on the visit.

While answering questions from journalists in Mombasa on Thursday, Mr Ouko said “time will come when we will have to look at that. It was a substantial government expenditure and we will of course look at it when time comes.”

Nairobi government had requested the national government for Sh107 million for the beautification works ahead of the visit by President Obama. Instead, it was given Sh25 million.

The county’s committee on Budget and Appropriations then set aside Sh 40 million to beautify the city, with about 1000 youths hired for the project.

The beautification included the growing of the much maligned #Kiderograss on major roads in the city.

The Auditor-General has recently  raised the red flag on the questionable spending of Sh66.7 billion by 17 ministries and state departments in the last financial year.
