Kidero names committee to oversee building of new houses in city

Governor Dr Evans Kidero has formed a 17-member County Urban Renewal Technical Committee to spearhead a proposed Sh300 billion housing development in the city.

The project seeks to put up 100,000 housing units and renovate existing homes.

It will ride on the County Comprehensive Urban Renewal Programme (ECURP), which aims to have a major face-lift in the city houses.

The first phase of the redevelopment project will be through seven quick-win projects in Old and New Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee/Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road.

Dr Kidero said in a statement they expect to build between 10,000 and 12,000 affordable housing units in partnership with the private sector.

“The team, which will report to the County Executive Urban Renewal Mr Tom Odongo, will be expected to firm up issues prior to commencement of construction,” read the statement.

Tenants and business people residing in these estates have been consulted and promised allocation of new units for purchase through the tenant purchase scheme and also outright purchase or mortgage system.

Officials said no tenant will be displaced in the process.
