Kibera pupils stranded after school’s demolition

Two primary schools were among the structures demolished in Kibera slums early on Monday morning as the government cleared the way for a link road.

Makina Self-help primary school and Adventure Pride Centre were taken down in the early morning exericise.

Egesa Children’s Centre, a children’s home, was also affected. There was heavy security in the slums as exercise kicked at 5am.

Officers drawn from various security agencies patrolled the slum as bulldozers brought down the buildings.

The construction of the Ngong Road-Kibera-Kiungu Karumba-Langata link road has been in limbo over fear that the residents will not move out of the road reserve.

COMPENSATION

Residents were, however, seen peacefully picking their belongings, with no signs of skirmishes.

Earlier this month, the Nubian Rights Forum (NRF) chairperson Shafi Ali Hussein, who represents the Nubian Community, said the government and the community had resolved to compensate those who would be affected by the construction of the road.

The road is being developed by Kenya Urban Roads Authority.
