Kibera man in court for forcibly circumcising daughter

By VINCENT AGOYA February 3rd, 2015 1 min read

A father was on Tuesday charged in a Nairobi court with forcefully circumcising his 13-year-old-daughter and then forcing her into marriage.

The prosecution said the accused, (name withheld), committed the offence in December at Laini Saba in Kibera, Langa’ta district.

He later forced her into marriage.

The charge sheet stated that being the child’s father, he willfully and negligently failed to prevent the girl from the harmful cultural practice of genital mutilation and forced early marriage that negatively affected her life in general and health in particular.

The matter was deferred to the children’s court by the presiding magistrate Miriam Mugure.

The man has been charged with committing the offence contrary to section 14 as read with section 20 of the children’s Act 2001, which outlaws circumcision of girls.

The child (also name withheld) has since been taken into a foster home after she was rescued from the forced marriage.
