VIDEO: Kenya coronavirus cases jump to 7 – Mutahi Kagwe

Health CS Mutahi Kagwe has announced three more cases of coronavirus, pushing to seven the number of patients in Kenya.

The first two cases related to the three, he says, are a couple that had travelled from Madrid Spain on March 4, 2020, through Dubai, arriving in the country on March 5.

The third case among the three involves a Burundian national who had travelled from Dubai to Kenya arriving on March 17 and surveillance at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) was able to detect his high temperature.

“Yesterday afternoon I gave an update of the status of coronavirus disease in Kenya confirming that we have 4 coronavirus cases in Kenya. Today we have received confirmation of another three cases of coronavirus following tests that were carried out by the national influenza centre as well as Kemri laboratories in the country, therefore, we now have in the country seven confirmed cases,” said Mr Kagwe.

“It is very important to note that all these cases have been imported cases from outside the country.”

The Health ministry is now tracing persons who may have come into contact with these patients.

Eighteen cases are currently admitted at the Mbagathi isolation centre where seven have been screened and came back negative.

Sign a legal form

The 11 remaining suspected cases are currently being processed in the two government-designated laboratories.

The seven who tested negative are being processed to be discharged and continue self-quarantine at their homes under close supervision from the ministry of health staff.

“I want to make a special appeal to Kenyan who are travelling from outside the country it is now clear that the threat that we face first and foremost is coming from Kenyans coming from overseas, and that is why we had said that Kenyans who are coming in from oversees must self-quarantine,” says Mr Kagwe.

“Effective today, any Kenyan who is travelling from outside the country must sign a legal form at the airport to confirm that they are going to self-quarantine themselves.”
