KenHA to slap politicians with Sh85k fine for posters on bridges

The Kenya National Highway Authority (KenHA) has announced new punitive fines to curb the defacement of bridges and flyovers.

The new fine will also apply onculprits who paste posters on road rails.

The authority has already repainted all bridges and  flyovers on Thika Superhighway.

The freshly painted surface bear a warning that no posters will be allowed and defaulters will be fined.

The new development comes six months to the general election, a period often characterized by a publicity frenzy on roads, buildling walls and billboards.

Nairobi News sought a clarification on how the fine will be imposed and the authority’s head of corporate affairs Charles Njogu said “the fine is payable per defaulter.”

Defaulters will be taken to court to answer to the charges under the Roads Act and will be fined Sh85,000, failure to which they will serve a jail term not exceeding two years.

“This is just a message we are trying to pass to make our roads safe and motorable; it has nothing to do with the campaigns. Please do not misinterpret,” said Mr Njogu.

The commonest posters are usually those advertising the services of  witchdoctors as well as entertainers publicizing concerts.
