Kalonzo clears bill after being kicked out of Karen club

Cord principal Kalonzo Musyoka on Wednesday hurriedly settled an unpaid bill at the exclusive Karen country club after being struck off the membership list.

The club had last Friday listed Mr Musyoka among 20 other members who had been banned from using the facility over non-payment of bills.

The Wiper leader had a pending bill of Sh22, 337. He contacted the club’s management on Wednesday and paid up the amount.

Mr Musyoka confirmed through his aide that he is a member of the exclusive club, but denied having knowledge of an unpaid bill.

OUT OF THE COUNTRY

He explained that he had not visited the club lately as he had been out of the country before President Barack Obama’s visit.

“It should be noted that the membership of the club accommodates the principal and family members and thus a debt can be incurred without his knowledge,” read Mr Musyoka’s statement.

Karen Country Club has in the past publicly named high ranking members who have defaulted payment, including retired President Mwai Kibaki, without notifying them.

Mr Musyoka stated that the club had not notified him about the unpaid bill.

“I want to clarify that the Karen club management had not notified him on the said debt. We have taken up the issue with the organization and the debt has been settled promptly,” read the statement.
