Jobless graduate stands on road with a sign asking for employment – PHOTOS
A university graduate down on his luck has warmed the hearts of many city residents after he camped on the Muthaiga Road with a placard asking for employment.
Patrick Muthomi was on Wednesday morning pictured carrying the placard that outlined his qualifications and contact details. The photos have been shared widely on social media.
Mr Muthomi graduated from Chuka University in 2014 with an undergraduate degree in Bachelor’s of Commerce, accounting option. He also has a certificate in CPA section 4.
He narrated to Nairobi News how immediately after graduation, he got a job as a business teacher at Mwiga SDA Secondary School in Nyeri where he worked for five months.
BIG CITY, BIG DREAMS
He however left the job and headed for the big city with his wife and toddler to pursue what he thought would be a dream career as an accountant.
However a year and a half later, the city under the sun rewarded his efforts and enthusiasm with nothing but brutal reality of joblessness.
He has received no reply to his more than 200 job applications that he has sent out to different institutions.
“I left Nyeri to come to Nairobi with big dreams of getting a good job and furthering my skills and career, but little did I know that Nairobi is much more worse in job hunting than other cities. I have sent more than 200 of my CV’s with no reply’s,” said Mr Muthomi.
HAWKING
The 28 year old is married and has a two and a half year old daughter. He lives with his young family in Mwiki. He ekes a living by hawking tissue paper and serviettes in Kasarani and Roysambu.
On his free time you will find him in a cyber café checking his email for any response from an employer.
So why not try his luck in another town where the job market is not as competitive as Nairobi?
“Although my biggest problem is finding a job, my mind is still telling me that Nairobi is the place for me to grow in my career as an accountant. For me this is the center of gravity,” he told Nairobi News.
Undaunted, Muthomi decided to be more aggressive by taking his job hunt to the streets.
“I went to the busy Muthaiga road so someone could see my plight and hopefully offer me a job or give me advice on how to get a job. I do not want jokers since I am very serious,” he said in the interview.
